Human Being…Female

LONDON — When Nicola Thorp reported to work awhile back as a temporary receptionist in the financial center here, she was shocked when her temp supervisor said her flat shoes were unacceptable. She would need to get herself shoes with heels at least two inches high.

When she refused, she was sent home from the accounting firm PwC without pay. But that was not the end of it. Five months later, Ms. Thorp, an actress originally from the northern seaside city of Blackpool, started a petition calling for a law that would make sure no company could ever again demand that a woman wear heels to work.

The petition garnered more than 150,000 signatures, helped spur a popular backlash — dozens of professional women posted photographs of themselves on Twitter defiantly wearing flats — and prompted an inquiry overseen by two parliamentary committees. Nicola Thorp was told in December 2015 that her shoes were unacceptable for a temporary assignment in London with finance firm PwC.

Her employment agency, Portico, had a dress code specifying that female workers must wear non-opaque tights, have hair with “no visible roots,” wear “regularly re-applied” makeup — and appear in shoes with a heel between 2 to 4 inches high. Women have never been given fair, make that equal treatment in the workplace, just the other day a male-female anchoring news team, the male appeared in suit and tie along with a sweater while the female was attired in a sleeveless dress, television studios are notoriously cold, everyone watching could just feel her discomfort. And who haven’t watched an entertainment chat show when an actress does a walk on in the mandatory heels, giving the impression that they are not in her everyday wardrobe, since she has not developed the necessary walking skills to master the shoes. Fear not ladies, you have indeed come a long way, yesterday, a woman did the weather in trousers and last year one was at least six months on, locally anchored the news, now that is progress of sort. However, you are still not fully there yet, as news rooms are stocked with women that are forced or so it seems to lighten their hair or costume a wig. News contributors looking very much like beauty queens than hard nose professional journalist. The first lady of most countries remains hosting teas, passing out cookies in the living quarters, while the men are discussing life and death events of the day in the conference room.

On this International Women’s Day or Day Without Women, some women stayed home, some went to work running their businesses, joined in rallies wearing red, wore in heels? very few did, you see, it was not required…
