A Thumping Victory

While most of the western world is in global retreat of immigrants, in Ireland it’s a totally different affair, when today, the first openly gay and youngest and immigrant to boot was elected Prime Minister by a sixty percent margin, I forgot to emphasize more strongly, immigrant, a Dublin born in 1979 to an Indian father and Irish mother. When one is born in Dublin, does that make one a true immigrant or just an immigrant once removed? Oh, with all the excitement I failed to mention the new Ministers name, its Leo Varadkar, his parents have only lived in Ireland since the 1970’s, what is further remarkable, being gay was illegal until the 1990’s in all of Ireland, that must have taken some enlightenment and been very taxing on that nations way of thinking. Varadkar came out of the closet in 2015 just months before same sex marriage became legal by voter referendum, his partner is a medical doctor (as is Leo) in Dublin…In the end, “prejudice has no hold on this Republic”, someone who should know has said…

During an interview on RTÉ Radio on 18 January 2015 (his 36th birthday), Varadkar spoke publicly for the first time about being gay: “it’s not something that defines me. I’m not a half-Indian politician, or a doctor politician or a gay politician for that matter. It’s just part of who I am, it doesn’t define me, it is part of my character I suppose”. This made him the first openly gay cabinet member in Ireland. Varadkar was a prominent advocate of the same-sex marriage referendum.
His partner, Matthew Barrett, is a doctor at Mater Misericordiae University Hospital. From Wikipedia…
