It Ain’t Natural

Yesterday I heard a resident of a flooded city ask, where did all this water come from? As if the earth has somehow produced more water today than there was the day before. The answer may be a little yes and a little no. Water stored in the northern and southern ice caps may be melting resulting in more liquid water as opposed to ice, swelling the oceans, seas, rivers and lakes. With the warming of the earth and its increased water evaporation seem to be producing more precipitation, our expanding cities love to have paved roads and surfaces, resulting in fewer dirt roads and natural outsides, that is all well and good provided drainage systems were also employed with the paving. Without good drainage, the water will just run from point to point and without any absorbing ground, the result is flooding.

And from Joni Mitchell…Big Yellow Taxi
They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot
With a pink hotel *, a boutique
And a swinging hot spot

Don’t it always seem to go
That you don’t know what you’ve got
Till it’s gone
They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot

They took all the trees
Put ’em in a tree museum *
And they charged the people
A dollar and a half just to see ’em

Don’t it always seem to go
That you don’t know what you’ve got
Till it’s gone
They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot

Hey farmer farmer
Put away that DDT * now
Give me spots on my apples
But leave me the birds and the bees
Please!

Don’t it always seem to go
That you don’t know what you’ve got
Till it’s gone
They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot

Late last night
I heard the screen door slam
And a big yellow taxi
Took away my old man

Don’t it always seem to go
That you don’t know what you’ve got
Till it’s gone
They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot

They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot
