The American Congress overrode a presidential veto by passing into law a bill that will allow American civilians to be able to sue the government of Saudi Arabia and by extension other governments. A seemly purely emotional effort; to what end? By so doing it will open the door(s) to all kinds of frivolous law suits to each and every American that steps foot on foreign soil, crippling their ability to travel the world without fear of litigation at every port of call. International law; “a body of rules that control or affect the rights of nations in their relations with each other” Merriam-Webster. “International law differs from state-based legal systems in that it is primarily applicable to countries rather than to private citizens. National law may become international law when treaties delegate national jurisdiction to supranational tribunals such as the European Court of Human Rights or the International Criminal Court. The American congress has always been made up largely of lawyers but I don’t think they have fully considered this kettle of fish before it starts to stink with all its implications going forward, in my view they have been blinded by this election years’ ballyhoo. Whenever my neighbors see me in suit and tie making my way toward the transit hub they can assume one or two things, I have a very important business appointment or am off to do some serious shopping. Suit and tie to shop, may sound a little weird, however, I like the way a little formal dress can command a little respect in some stores, in others, I’m still followed around as if I am about to shove a stove into my paints and make off with it.

One day a few years ago watching the local news, the camera was kept running in broadcast mode in error after the program ended allowing viewers to see the anchors stand up from their desk to leave the studio, the male anchor was dressed in suit and tie, however, from the waist down, jeans, then on to tennis shoes.

In local New York news these days it is not unusual to find a male reporter doing a stand-up outside in front of a bank in shirtsleeves with or without a coat, when years ago his top body would be housed in suit and tie, bottom in denim. The cat has been thrown out of the bag the charade is over, male reporters can now be seen in ‘come as you are’ getups, females, not so much, whom must have a crew with a hair and make-up artist in tow, well some big network stars do…

Is it important to you knowing the age of the news reader on your local or network news show, or even the news contributors on the same program? Does it really matter as the news room has become just as show busyness as any set in Hollywood, some do. I write that it seems to matter to journalist unlike never before spending a great deal of time on their appearance, the younger the better for the females, the less old the better for the males, whom are dyeing their hair or adding the adornment of toupees in numbers not seen before. A new law passed in California, requires that the Internet Movie Database, be forced to remove actors ages if so requested, claiming this knowledge may interfere with them getting acting roles. May I add by extension; a female news contributor may not be asked to contribute on a news program because of her publicly known advanced age coupled with an old age appearance. Lately I have found the hair and make-up of some female news contributors a distraction, a little like leaving a Broadway musical humming the stage scenery. America has always been a society based on immaturity, no make that, juvenility, and not setting a premium on age with wisdom, in some cases we want the wisdom, yes, just don’t look old and oh yes, keep your age numbers to yourself…

I would like to think that the electorate is knowledgeable enough about the basic issues of the day to in their mind to be able to fact check what is being claimed, however, in this age of mass media that is not even practical it’s impossible. International Kennel Clubs are a relative small community harmoniously meeting year after year at community dog shows displaying the same top notch breeds must compare forerunner notes as a prognostication of the expected life of a dog and in so doing are banking on a blue ribbon winner able to generate the highest stud fees, bragging rights and not give a dam or concern for the ill health life span of the dog what is important is how the dog looks on that one day in time.

As president of the fictionalized clean screen movement after so many years without any luck or progress and without showing any meaningful results in the campaign I am not yet ready to declare defect, even though most broadcast morning news shows now display the annoying news crawl as do most cable news networks. The good news is at the end of that dark tunnel there can be seen some light in that doing prime time broadcast hours, the cables are so deeply entrenched with their news crawls, that in their off hours they are not. For years’ top advertising dollars are earned during prime time leaving the off hour earnings meager as they are, from local sponsors like car dealerships, restaurants and outlet products. What some network managers have discovered that societies like mine have been urging those that hate news crawls into DVRing their prime time news casts that are rebroadcast or new programing shown at off hours without a news crawl is getting larger, boosting audience numbers and advertising fees that can be charged. Regrettably the war against on-screen logos, clocks, temperature information have long been lost as have the recent arrivals of giant event clocks all designed to clutter up the television screen with any and everything that is truly unnecessary in this age of hand held devices that is never far from our person…So I ask you once again, how many news stories can one effectively following at one time? Did you hear that? No I was busy reading the news crawl…

Are humans too dumb to drive cars? With almost every manual task now performed by humans when automated, has saved energy, reduced materials, improved quality, accuracy and precision, in a few short years, some say about five, it will be a wonderment that we ever allowed humans to drive cars since they are disposed to being distracted and are accident prone. Some cars already have what is called cruise control, some swear by it, others just don’t trust it or anything that cannot be controlled by a human, that is the main reason(s) that is holding back the self-driving car, even though it is much praised in air travel, go figure. Or how about punching in 34 East 34^th Street and winding up at 34 East 34^th Avenue. Any automation must be in some way be computerized which some fear opens the door wide to hacking, not only being able to change the listening media in your car but run it off a cliff or into a stone wall without anyone even knowing or suspecting the initiator, like ones mother in law. And with computerization there will have to be screen(s) and software so can advertising be far behind with ads like ‘we can drive your car for $24.95, plus tax’…Finally your car manufacturer may partner with a drone manufacturer arranging for a high flying scout ahead of your vehicle advising traffic conditions or if a bridge has been flooded out, flashing on your screen your destination with a warning, ‘don’t go there!’

 

We like to think that Native Americans are indigenous peoples whose pre-Columbian ancestors were indigenous before these modern times, however, for this post let us try to consider if it’s possible to become a new Native American and if so to be so considered how many generations would it take, one, two or maybe five or ten, or should one’s ancestors have traveled to North America on the Mayflower, the ship that transported English Separatists known as the Pilgrims. I for one will never understand the current rationality of these so called new Native Americans to have empowered themselves with the authority to decide if any immigrants new or future will ever be able to become the new native Americas, in this nation founded by immigrants for immigrants with an open door policy and a welcoming strategy for new immigrants. It’s as if to proclaim the welcoming door has now been slammed shut in the face to all who dare to come a knocking with the ladder having been pulled up, no more room at the Inn. The life blood of any nation are its immigrants bubbling up to the top with new innovations not currently under consideration by present company. It has always been the immigrants that came from nothing that were able to dream up the possible form what was once impossible… 

 

Yellow journalism, or the yellow press, is a type of journalism that presents little or no legitimate well-researched news and instead uses eye-catching headlines to sell more newspapers. Techniques may include exaggerations of news events, scandal-mongering, or sensationalism. In the old days many New Yorkers getting off work before heading into the underground would grab a copy of one the screaming tabloids of which there were many in those days, featuring headlines along with a disgusting cover picture, use your imagination, creating a must read story costing only a few pennies for the hot crowded ride home. Today there are still tabloids practicing the trade in the same old way, with the added devices in our pockets performing the same task, sparking subjects like immigration, terrorism, the religious possessed and yes patrioteers, getting it on in riots fueled by all kinds of societal dissension. The aim is not so much to inform but to inflame, to make a buck on the backs of our deep and extreme emotional hatred of, you name it, to be reinforced as only our favorite websites can do as we like sheep to the slaughter, engage willing in the game achieving satisfaction that has been transferred from a presidential candidate and not realize it until it may be too late to recover from the deadly feast of a game to long played and unable to be pulled back from the brink…let us pray to be delivered…

Beginning Saturday (09/17/2016) and on into the end of the year, those cascades of bombings from New Jersey to New York City, have been described depending on your choice of media, in one sided talking points. Few Americans have been able to form their own well thought out opinion without being heavily influenced by their favorite media outlet to reinforce what they think they already know. I would like to hope that an accurate appraisal of issues would have been formed after one hour spent listening to right wing talk radio and one hour spent watching liberal cable news, notice I did not mention left wing talk radio, I don’t think there is one, oh there are programs, networks? if there are any let me know. Nobody likes for their views to be challenged, it’s an uncomfortable feeling, and will go out of their way to feel comfortable among other people who share the same views, and so it is with media talking points. If you are against more immigrants invading the country vs more immigrants being invited it can be a question of a word, invading vs invite, whatever, all your associates will be sharing the same talking points, an accurate appraisal of the issue will forever be lost both to you and to those that surround you.
